In 2024, the city of San Francisco declared October as SF Stairway Month. The idea was seeded by Glen Park Beautiful co-founder Renee Berger and has since become an annual city celebration.  There were three events: 1) a book talk with Mary Burk, author of “Stairway Walks in San Francisco” and Alexandra Kenin, who mapped over 900 of the city’s stairways (and authored several books on urban hiking); 2) a conference on stairway beautification; and 3) a specially designed walk that connected five tiled stairways. Joining for the walk, titled “Truly Terrific: Tiled to Tiled Stairway Walk,” were the gifted artists, Aileen Barr and Colette Crutcher, who designed and made the tiles for all five stairways.
