Overview
“Our Canyon” offers a spirited preview of Glen Canyon Park to all who pass by its southeastern edge. Painted on a long, low retaining wall, the mural depicts the natural and built environment highlights that await visitors to the park.
Artwork
For this project, neighbors retained Sirron Norris, a well-established artist whose commitment to community involvement and work with children fit perfectly with the vision for the project. Through community input sessions, he identified the most loved features of Glen Canyon: the city’s first public rock climbing wall, the co-operative pre-school/summer camp building, and of course the park’s plants and animals.
In Sirron’s signature style, the 200’ long mural features large charismatic birds, a nearly two-foot-high gopher, and a great horned owl placed right at the T-intersection of Elk and Chenery, where it stares down drivers who might otherwise have considered running a stop sign.
