2026 San Francisco Stairway Month

The 3rd annual SF Stairway Month (founded by Glen Park Beautiful’s Renee Berger as a key component of San Francisco’s newly designated Walktober) was another resounding success. The Civic Joy Fund hosted and Glen Park Beautiful organized three events. On October 18, about 45 walkers tackled a 1500-step cardio challenge through the Russian Hill and Telegraph Hill neighborhoods. At each breather, a team of San Francisco City Guides shared stories of the area’s history. On October 24, an even larger group trekked upward of nine miles to five of San Francisco’s iconic tiled stairways. Along the way, they met the tile artists and community leaders who made each project happen. Then, on October 27 Glen Park’s Bird & Beckett hosted a packed house for a lively conversation featuring tile artists Aileen Barr and Colette Crutcher; Mary Burk, author of the iconic “Stairway Walks in San Francisco”; and Alexandra Kenin, author of the Urban Trails series, who mapped over 900 of SF’s stairways. The message running through every event was that this is about more than walking and climbing stairs; it’s about doing it together, in community.
